Enrolling now! Please register for this class by contacting Souzana.  Space is limited, register in advance!  In this class, students will perfect and move beyond the of fundamentals of Egyptian Raks Sharki and American cabaret styles of belly dance, work on developing stage presence and begin to understand different styles, history, and evolution of belly dance from a social dance to the performance art it is today.  Students will expand their dance vocabulary by working on variations on foundational movements, new moves, (such as various types of shimmies and stomach articulations) as a well as learn dance combos, rhythms and fingers cymbal (zill) patterns of increased complexity.  Technique such as shimmy overlays (layering shimmies over fundamental moves such as hip & ribcage circles and hip & ribcage slides) is introduced in Level 2. Completion of Level 1 is a prerequisite for enrolling in Level 2.  It’s highly recommend that students take Level II for at least of few years in order to get a chance to perform choreographies using different props (such as veil, cane, zills, sword) and in different styles (Egyptian Sha’abi, Egyptian Oriental, American cabaret, fusion).  Each year, my intermediate curriculum is taught but depending on the type of choreography students learn that year to perform at Tundra Caravan’s spring recital and Tanana Valley Fair, the focus of the class from year to year is different.

This is a multi-level class in which students will focus on tribal fusion technique, as well as incorporating dance movement (e.g., jazz, ballet) fundamentals. Students will focus on developing performance skills in addition to strong technique, with class time balanced between strengthening, drilling, and developing stylized movement.

During the 2nd semester of the class, students will focus on learning and perfecting a choreography to be performed with their class in the yearly community spring recital hosted by Tundra Caravan. To accommodate the multi-level aspect of this class, choreography developed will include multiple parts that allow all students in this class to showcase their strengths.

While this is a multi-level class, some experience with dance or movement (e.g., yoga, pilates) will be very helpful. We will drill fundamentals, but will also incorporate intermediate moves. If you are brand new to movement classes, one of Souzana’s beginning belly dance classes may be most appropriate for you.
